mitt romney thanked his wife ann, his running mate paul ryan, and his supporters, as he conceded the race late last night. called president obama to congratulate him on his victory. his staff and campaign also deserves congratulations. i wish all of them well. this is a time of great challenges for america and i pray that the president will be successful in getting our nation. he won't be our next vice president but congressman paul ryan will be returning to capitol hill. ryan's name was in two spots on his hometown ballot.. as mitt romney's running mate, and also for re-election to congress, representing southeastern wisconsin. ryan won another term. defeating his democratic opponent, businessman rob zerban, by a comfortable margin. illinois republican party leaders gathered this morning, in the aftermath of mitt romney's defeat and g-o-p

>> both sides talking about healing and working together it is going to be interesting to see which side is the first to extend an olive branch to the other. president obama will continue to work with a house that's controlled by the republicans. the house remains mostly intact despite record low approval ratings. some of the g-o-p freshmen, who were supported by the tea party two years ago, got voted out. at least five democrats were also defeated. house speaker john boehner told his supporters last night that the election was not a mandate for raising taxes.

democrat tammy duckworth is on her way to washington, after she defeated republican congressman joe walsh. she won the 8th congressional district by 10-points with 55- percent of the vote. nancy loo is live in rolling meadows where duckworth is thanking voters and volunteers today. nancy? >> it was under a glaring national spotlight. >> on the morning after her big win the congresswoman elect treated voters at the metro station to thank them for sending her to washington. she told them that she is eager to get to work for the eighth district even for those who did not support her. >> it does not matter whether or not you voted for me. what matters is that i do my job serving them. >> her win was one of the countries most closely watched races. it follows an especially bitter campaign. labels as too extreme and a deadbeat dad. accusing duckworth of focusing

congressman jesse jackson junior will stay in office, despite staying out of the public eye for several months. he won in a landslide victory over republican challenger brian woodworth and independent marcus lewis. jackson did not make any public appearances last night. but he did release a statement to his supporters, saying. i am humbled and moved by the support shown today. everyday, i think about your needs and concerns. once the doctors approve my return to work i will continue to be the progressive fighter you have known for years. yesterday's election returns were a vote for the status quo. while republicans held the house, democrats maintained their hold on the senate. the democrats picked up at least two new seats. and a third republican seat in maine went independent, and effectively democrat, assuming the new senator, angus king, caucuses with the democrats. w-g-n political analyst paul lisnek has been here since yesterday. he's in the newsroom with a closer look at what happened last night.

in medical watch. heart attack damage may not be as permanent as once thought. a new study suggests that cardiac stem cells might help fully repair damaged hearts. research presented at the american heart association conference this week finds that heart attack patients infused with their own heart stem cells had more flexible heart muscle. their hearts also pumped blood more efficiently and had half the scarring after treatments. larger studies will be needed to confirm the results before
